Mainframes Don’t Get Old, But Sometimes Support Models Do

13 July 2026 - 3 Minute Read

It's surprising how often people talk about IBM mainframes as though they are somehow approaching the end of their lives when in reality, many of them are doing exactly what they were bought to do twenty or thirty years ago.

They process millions of transactions they run businesses that simply cannot afford downtime, they remain probably the most reliable computing platforms ever built.

The technology itself has not suddenly become less capable but over time the support model wrapped around it becomes obsolete & not specifically fit for a machine in its lifecycle.

Every year the maintenance invoice arrives, costs edge upwards and eventually someone asks the obvious question:

"Are we still paying for the right thing?"

Which is a perfectly reasonable question.

For many organisations, IBM support continues to be the best choice, particularly where software upgrades, firmware and the latest platform enhancements are important.

But not every organisation is trying to stay on the very latest release.

Many have stable environments running z/OS 2.4 or earlier on IBM Z14, Z13, Z12 or even older platforms. Their applications are mature, their operations teams know the environment inside out, and change is something that's managed carefully rather than rushed.

In those situations, the support conversation becomes very different, it’s no longer about replacing the mainframe, it's about supporting it sensibly.

At Baby Blue IT & Consulting, that's exactly where we fit.

Through our zOS Assist service, we work alongside inhouse teams, providing experienced technical support and escalation when it's needed, not replacing existing skills, but strengthening them.

That expertise covers many of the technologies that keep these environments running every day, including:

  • z/OS
  • CICS
  • IMS
  • Db2
  • IBM MQ
  • COBOL
  • PL/I
  • Fortran

Where appropriate, we can also discuss support options for IBM Z hardware when traditional maintenance is becoming increasingly expensive or is no longer available.

Our aim isn't to persuade organisations to change platforms, it's to help them continue running platforms they already trust, with a support model that reflects where those systems are today, not where they were when they were first installed.

The IBM mainframe has never been a platform that follows fashion, it succeeds because it delivers consistency, resilience and extraordinary longevity.

Perhaps it's time support evolved in the same way.

If you're reviewing your IBM mainframe support strategy, or simply want to understand what alternatives are available, Will would be delighted to have an informal conversation, or provide your machine details & Will will happily work out what’s achievable.
