IBM Mainframe Nine Years On

24 March 2026 - 1 Minute Read

Nine years ago, after attending the 2017 GSE Conference, I wrote and shared the article below. I had been to the conference a couple of times before, but 2017 felt different, 2017 had youth on its side.

It was genuinely refreshing to see so many younger people at a mainframe conference. Not just attending, but fully engaged, curious, enthusiastic, and clearly enjoying everything they were learning.

That post was only the second blog I’d ever written, inspired not only by the people I met there, but also by the far-sighted companies that had invested in the mainframe apprentices & in the future of the platform.

Reading the article again I may have been a little optimistic in the idea there was going to be a great upsurge in new mainframe sites but nine years on it is still the platform that powers the world & the fountain from which all other technologies flow.
