An unexpected reunion - the IBM i5 595

29 July 2025 - 3 Minute Read

There is nothing quite like meeting an old friend from the past, especially when it’s an unexpected reunion, even more so when the old friend is a 9406 595 IBM i5.

On a recent visit to one of our Customers/Business Partners, having a tour of their warehouse, my eyes immediately transfixed on a beautiful, imposing black creature standing all on its own with the words “IBM System i5” emblazoned on its front. It may sound sad but my excitement at seeing it was palpable, here was the pinnacle of IBM Power5 technology, combining raw performance, reliability, & flexibility, here was the peak of the classic iSeries hardware line before it became an element of Power Systems.

The conversation immediately turned to the provenance of the machine, how it got to the warehouse, where had it been installed, why was it here when it suddenly dawned on me, I had signed this very machine up for maintenance over ten years ago, probably more like fifteen. I know it sounds odd but I genuinely felt that I had met an old friend, not one I had physically met before, one I had only ever seen on a spreadsheet, but here it was in all it’s glory. It brought back all of the backline story memories as to how I got it on to our support, the convincing of the Customer that their precious machine was safe in our hands; it was quite a moment.

It got me thinking about how many more of these machines I got signed up for maintenance, quite a few I can think of & probably quite a few I can’t & where are these machines now. What happened to the hundreds of 550s, 570s, MMAs, MMBs, MMCs, MMDs, FHAs, FHBs along with the myriad of other machine types I got signed up for maintenance support?

Well, I’m hoping I might rekindle some memories & meet a few more of my old friends again as, at Baby Blue, we continue to support legacy IBM systems, including the classics like the 595, with expert care and genuine passion. Whether you’re running Power5 or Power10, & anything in between we’ve got the skills, the experience, & the IBM partnership to keep your systems running smoothly.

Have you got an old IBM system still humming away in your data centre? We’d love to hear about it!
