Still running on older z/OS and Z platforms?
24 April 2026 - 2 Minute Read
If you’re running your environment in-house on z/OS 2.4 or older, on platforms like IBM Z14, IBM Z13, IBM Z12 or IBM z114… you’ll probably recognise this.
Nothing is broken. Your team knows the estate inside out. The platform continues to do exactly what the business needs.
But every year, the support line in the budget edges up. And at some point, someone asks the question: “Remind me what we’re actually getting for this now?”

Most organisations stay with their OEM and in many cases, that’s the right call. As environments age though, support naturally shifts into extended tiers. The expertise is still there, but it becomes more specialist, more limited, and commercially… heavier.
The challenge isn’t that support disappears.
It’s that it starts to feel out of step with how the platform is being used today.
For teams that run everything in-house, the answer usually isn’t to outsource or rip anything out. These are stable environments, backed by experienced people. What’s often missing is simply a clear, credible option for support that fits this stage of the lifecycle, especially when something needs escalating beyond the internal team.
That’s where a different kind of conversation becomes useful.
Through services like ZOS Assist, Baby Blue IT & Consulting works alongside in-house teams supporting z/OS 2.4 and older environments, not to replace what’s already there, but to provide experienced escalation when it’s needed.
That includes the parts of the stack that tend to matter most day-to-day:
- CICS, IMS, Db2 and IBM MQ
- And the languages many of these estates are built on, COBOL, PL/I and Fortran
Alongside that, there are options to support the underlying hardware where traditional models are no longer the best fit.
None of this is about moving away from your current setup. It’s simply about knowing that you don’t have to default into one path as costs increase and that you can stay in control, keep your team, and still have somewhere to turn when you need support that makes sense.
If you’re running older z/OS or Z platforms and haven’t revisited your support approach in a while, it’s probably worth a conversation.
Get in touch for a no pressure discussion simply just to provide a clear outline of your options.
